Press Release: North Star Shines Again!

20th June 2013

Eglantine Vineyard, Nottinghamshire`s first commercial vineyard, is proud to announce that ‘North Star 2011’ has won a Gold Medal in the English and Welsh Wine of the Year competition announced yesterday (Wednesday 19th June, 2013). Judged most outstanding sweet wine in the competition North Star also scooped the Stefanowicz  Trophy. The award ceremony will be held at the House of Commons on 23rd of July.

The Competition, the most prestigious in the English and Welsh winemaker’s calendar attracts entries from many of the six hundred vineyards now producing in the UK. The judging panel, chaired by Anthony Foster MW, is composed entirely of Masters of Wine.

North Star, produced at Eglantine Vineyard, Nottinghamshire has an illustrious record. The first vintage, released in 2003 won a Silver Medal in the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2003 and every vintage released since that date has collected silver and or gold medals on both the national and the international scene.

Awards  for previous vintages at silver and/or gold standard: Vinalies Internationales, Vignerons Independents,  International Wine and Spirit Competition, Decanter WWA and the English National Wine Competition.

Asked whether there are any trophies still to be won Tony Skuriat, winemaker,  smiles wryly and admits that keeping the standard high is always a big challenge – and yes,  there is always another hill to climb, another medal, another trophy, which seems tantalisingly just out of reach for the moment!
